If you have two fobs, swap them and see if they both demonstrate the same behavior. That will direct to fob vs environment.

Update.... I did exactly this, and I haven't experienced low battery warnings on the other fob. I take it this means the "original" fob is ****ed and if I want it to work properly again the only thing I can do is replace it... ugh.
