I ordered a set of 4 2019 ES 18" noise reduction wheels and they are powder coating it black with a clear coat on top at no extra cost. Since they are doing a custom color for me there is no return unless of course there is a problem or damage to the rim. The wheels are 18 x 8 and offset is slightly higher than the stock gs wheels, so will be little more flush with the fender.

These are oem takeoffs or from insurance cars. They are true and they refinish the wheels prior to shipping.

Yes, I will, but don't plan on putting them on till Spring. I'll post pics when I get them next week.

From the reviews I read online, the noise reduction wheels are most noticeably quieter over the expansion joints on bridges, concrete roads. Lexus had been using their noise reduction wheels on the LS for about 10 years. I've been looking for an affordable set since the ES came out last year. I currently have my stock wheels plasti dipped Black, that has held up great if anything protected them for resale.

is it how the rim is shaped or is it like tesla where they just glue some foam to the rim/tire?

No foam or glue, hollow chambers in the spoke that port into the inner rim of the wheel.

In order to further reduce road noise, Lexus has also innovated in the area of the wheels. The result of that effort is noise-reduction wheels that are adopted to reduce weight, enhance rigidity, and suppress noise generated by the tires.

The weight reduction has been achieved through a hollow outer rim design. The weight saved by hollowing out the areas with no negative effect on the overall rigidity of the wheel has instead been allocated for reinforcement of the key areas.

The shape of the hollow structure is optimized, and a resonator hole has been installed, reducing the tire’s air column resonance. Five resonator holes for the 18-inch wheels or four resonator holes for the 19-inch wheels have been installed.



Tire air column resonance is generated as follows.
1. Tire deforms due to input from the road surface, and air pressure inside the tire changes.
2. Air inside the tires vibrate due to changes in pressure, and sound waves are generated in the tire’s air layer (air column).

Air forcefully enters and exits the resonator holes (friction is generated), and sound waves are converted to heat, causing a muffling effect.

There is a recording on YouTube somewhere of the standard vs hollow alloy wheels.
The volume is about the same; though the hollow noise reducing alloy wheels have a deeper pitch.
