Drive mode
Sorry if I’m reposting but I am curious to know what the average GS owner drives in Sport Mode. Mine is a ‘16 GS350 RWD so my choices are Eco, Normal and Sport and I drive them about 10% / 80% / 10% respectively. |
Mine is 2014 F-sport. I drive 0% ECO, 40% Normal, 0% Sport, 60% Sport +.
|
0% ECO
80% Normal 15% Sport 5% Sport+ |

Eco when commuting
Sport/Sport + any other time |
I usually rock Eco mode.
|
75% ECO
0% Normal 5% Sport 20% Sport+ (5% in manual) Just curious why not too many people use ECO more often to save on gas when they aren't having fun in the sport modes. Is gas consumption the same on Sport and Sport +? |
For those who consistently use Eco, is there any real MPG gains? I am 0% Eco as I figured it doesn't make much, if any, difference. I'm typically 75% normal and 25% sport+

18 GS 350 AWD
20% Eco 70% Normal 10% Sport |
2013 GS450h
60% normal 20% eco 20% sport+ It does seem like eco does give better MPG but it also feels like I lose 100HP unless I floor it. |
2016 GS 200T Premium
90% Eco 0% Normal 10% Sport Averaging 31.0 mpg over 18k miles as per trip computer. The Eco does seem to give better mpg but the car feels much heavier in Eco. |

2015 GS350
0% ECO 40% NORMAL 60% . SPORT + Since the car I drove before this one averaged 12 mpg DOWN HILL with a tail wind.... I don't really mind the lower MPG that you get in sport + mode, especially when weighed against the improved driving experience. I'm still averaging mid 20's mpg. |
GS450h
During commute, I use NORMAL. For leisure driving, and when I want to feel engaged, I will typically use SPORT+ on the highway or SPORT if I'm on City-streets. I never use ECO because the car seems sluggish. |
I have Full Catback JoeZ exhaust, so ECO and Normal drones alot between 2-3K RPM.
I prefer Sport/Sport + manual paddle shifting. I can control shift points to minimize the droning. It's annoying sometimes on long trips, but man WOT is pure sex with the JoeZ. |

with traveling, averaging 85 on interstate I barely get 24. I haven't tried it it normal to see if there is anything more than an negligible difference. |
2015 F Sport
Eco - 60% Normal - 30% Sport - 0% Sport + - 10% I do notice that I get 1-2 mpg better in Eco, but I think it's because I don't drive the same way in Eco that I do in the Sport modes. But most of my driving is around town and in traffic, so I like how Eco smooths out the throttle. I do Normal mode a fair amount, and Sport + on occasion. I like the suspension changes in Sport +, and after driving around in Eco so much, Sport/Sport + feel pretty awesome, but I don't like Sport + at low speeds (parking) as the steering becomes too heavy. |
2013 Lux
10% Eco 20% Normal 50% Sport 20% Sport+ |
Sorry to do this, but expanding on this topic a bit... because I just discovered how much differently the GS behaves when in Sport...!
I've been babying my new GS since I got it in September and have never used Sport mode for any length of time. But this afternoon, there seemed to be so many snowbirds on the road "out for a Sunday cruise"... getting stuck behind them was driving me nuts...I needed to get around these aggravating drivers quickly. So I dropped the selector in Sport and left it there, for the remaining 25 minute drive home... it felt like I was driving a different car. Is it my imagination or does the car seem a lot more powerful? (operative word here being "seem") Can a revised throttle response and tranny shifting really do so much? I've goosed the gas pedal lots of times in Normal mode to pass and go around traffic, but it was so much better in Sport. Again, is it just my imagination? So I got home and was checking my manual to see what it said about the drive modes, then lo and behold, I jump onto CL and see this thread... Also, it appears that Eco mode is mostly beneficial in stop-and-go traffic... there might not be a benefit in using Eco on the highway. Here's what my manual states: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.clu...c4d02a06a4.jpg |
You are correct. It’s not your imagination. Sport does really spice up things quite a bit! It’s pretty much like the folks here who use a Throttle Controllers like APEX-I. Those controllers spice things up even more! |
20% Eco, 60% Normal, and 20% Sport+.
I find the eco mode to work well when I have passengers that aren't impressed with driving dynamics and like a smooth ride (in-laws). I use normal for my commute as I find the sport modes to be too jumpy for causal driving. And of course, sport+ when I want to have fun. My wife loves Sport+ since she drives a beastly SUV and as she says, makes it feel like a go cart. |
Sport + - 100%
|
Eco - 30%
Normal 50% Sport - 0% Sport + w/ manual shifting - 20% |
2015 F-Sport
Eco - 60% ( in traffic or commuting, car is too fast for anything other than eco in bumper to bumper lol) Normal - 0% Sport - 15% Sport + - 25% ( when merging or by myself :driving: ) |
How do you all get "normal" mode to show up on the screen? I can only toggle between eco, customize, sport, and sport s! Am I missing something? TIA

IMO Eco doesn't make a difference in terms of mileage, although I do throw it into ECO when I start up in the morning and the car holds the RPMS high to help warm up the car faster. I find it annoying so switching to ECO to stop that from happening.
ECO: 1% Normal: 97% Sport: 2% |
Cool to see the diverse array of drive mode preferences.
2015 F-Sport: ECO: 80% Normal; 5% Sport: 0% Sport+: 15% I live in the city and work from home, so I don't put a lot of highway miles on the car. Mostly short trips, so I've been keeping it in ECO mode consistently, but still struggling to crack 20mpg average. Often look for a reason to go on longer drives with varied roads so I have an excuse to use Sport+. Don't really see the point of Sport mode when I can just turn the dial one more spin to the right and get the AVS goodness. |

Eco: 90% with Sport + 10%. I'd do sport+ more if it stayed in that mode when turning the car on like eco does but it doesn't

2017 GS350 F-sport Eco - 0% Normal - 0% Sport - 0.1% (when I accidentally didn’t turn the knob two clicks) Sport S+ - 99.9% Just love how tight and responsive the car feels in Sport S+ mode! I still get around low to mid-20s mpg when cruising on the freeway, so no point for eco or normal mode. Plus, I prefer the look of the gauge in sport mode (white ring and bigger numbers). |
2017 GS350
ECO - 0% Normal - 95% Sport - 5% Most of my driving is highway on cruise, and ECO doesn't help: the tach stays in the same place as Normal, so I don't bother with it. I use Sport when entering the highway in traffic, or in town and I need to get around somebody. Otherwise, I leave it in Normal. |
So now that I figured out normal mode. What is it so different than eco mode? Cuz my HUD still shows eco display on my gas pedal use. Also, what is customize mode?! TIA |

TIA The ECO wording you see on the HUD is not telling you which drive mode you are in. It's simply referring that if you press the gas within the left side of the bar range, you are driving the car in an "economical" way (not to be mistakenly as ECO mode). When the bar shifts to the right when you press the gas harder, you are in "power" which simply means your engine is working harder, and sipping more gas at that very moment. The topic here in what we are actually discussing is entirely different than the HUD. We are talking about ECO, Normal, Sport, and Sport+ "drive modes." To answer your question, when you are in ECO drive mode, the car's computer will tell the engine to respond to your gas pedal input more slowly. Therefore, your vehicle's throttle response will be more sluggish and in theory, and in design, is meant to save you fuel, hence "eco drive-mode." The normal drive-mode will put the settings in default.. meaning the car's computer will not slow down your throttle response, and your vehicle will respond the normal way. When you get into Sport, it's the opposite, the throttle response will be quicker which makes your car feel and respond faster. |

Customized mode was new for 2016 models.
Since mine is a 15, I don't have intimate knowledge of where the settings/menus are, but my understanding is that you can use it to make your own mode, say - SportS+ suspension and throttle but Eco HVAC settings and Normal steering. |
With Customize, you can manually set your Drive Mode with 3 settings, Transmission, Handling and AC.
