Does Navi operate in the background or is it canceled when interface is activated, or does it just reacquire/recalculate? Is it GS issue and separate from the interface? I plan a xc trip soon and wondered if i had to re-input destinations...

It should just reacquire and recalculate the already existing address. All the module does it interrupt the signal until you reengage. It is a GS issue. The modules all achieve the unlock the same way.
