The dollar bills.

Ok, I was curious if someone familiar with the system can chime in if there is some actual security feature such as coding to the VIN or some other proprietary firmware API that only they can trigger. If its just a matter of actually obtaining the data on USB/DVD then the internet is your friend...

I would like to be sure before I make an attempt to update my map

I got a 2-day subscription to TechInfo a while back, and the nav update procedure was one of the documents I looked at. From what I see in it, there are two obstacles faced by anyone trying to update the nav system on their own:

1) The map updates are supplied on a USB drive directly to dealers. When you buy the update, you get only an activation code, not the actual data.

2) To make use of that activation code, you have to log on to TIS and go through a process to generate a license key. You have to enter the activation code, vehicle VIN, work order number, etc., and it looks to be something you have to log in under a dealer's account to even do.

So the short answer as to why you can't do it yourself is only dealers get the updated data and only dealers can generate the license key needed to install it.

OK, that is what I was wondering, so the trigger (license key) is coded to VIN + Activation code.... seemed like the most obvious way for them to lock out others from doing it..... cheezy.

So, after installing the 2013 maps you get the firmware upgrade to v661400? I love lexus but they do a terrible job at communicating around technology. None of the local dealers know anything about this and they give you wrong information all the time.

I have a 2013 that was delivered to the dealer in April 2013 and I purchased in Dec. 2013. I just called to see if my maps were up to date and they said yes. They said a new map update is issued every January. Go figure!

My point exactly. Map updates come in September, not January. My dealership says the 2013 Maps has no Firmware updates. Seems like Lexus has no idea how to coordinate this process.

I doubt very much you have the latest map update.Dealers don't update every vehicle in stock when an update comes out.
Definitely something a buyer can negotiate when haggling during the buying process.

Unfortunately, the buying process is over. Live and learn.

Kajn: is yours a 2014 or 2013? you seem to have the latest firmware on this forum.

Actually the latest maps came out November or December of last year. I bought my car in August and barely missed the update window so I get to pay or see entertaining things happen when I get on a certain tollway.

I live in Dallas and have the same exact problem. They're working on the Tollway and the entrances are now in odd places, so I can be driving on the Tollway and the nav is telling me to enter the Tollway. I just delete the destination and go back to "previous destinations" and re-input it so the satellite signal can get its bearings. I don't think even the nav update can remedy this.

I read the "changelog" for the latest map, it adds alot of tollways in north Texas and expands existing ones. Particularly PGBT eastbound from 75.
