Flash drive and the 2013 gs
I had the same problem as you did at first. I then read the users manual and there is a step in there that instructs you to close the center console arm rest after you plug in the flash drive. Not sure if this is the answer to the problem but I did just that and it worked flawlessly.
On a Mac, my thumb showed just the jpg files in their properly named folders and yet would not load into my wife's 2013 GS450h - files not found error or some such. Put the drive on a PC set to show ALL files (even hidden ones) and AHA! There were all kinds of hidden files, folders, and weird psuedofiles with names similar to my jpgs. I deleted EVERYTHING except the two folders each containing 3 jpgs and they loaded right up. I forget the sizes but everything loaded in no more than a minute. Good luck.
I finally got it to work. Here is what I did that made it work: I lowered the resolution on my images. I brought it down to width of about 1100 pixels and they got loaded. My original pictures were about 4000 pixels wide. It took about about 2 minutes to load. When I was trying to load the high resolution, the system recognized the disk and all but then gave up after about 30 minutes or so. The screen just went black. FYI, the screen size is not 8 inch high as you may find on the net. I measured it and it's about 4.5. Shame on Lexus on this part. So lack of information. They should give more specs on size and resolution of the images.
