windshield woes

so, get this: the GS i just bought has 2 chips in the windshield. i thought one looked repaired and the other not. worried the unrepaired chip might turn into a crack, spread and cost me $1,000 for a new windshield, i stopped by a local shop with a large number of 5 star reviews on google maps. wanting to not taint the answer i would get, i only pointed the dude to the windshield without saying much. he told me one chip had been repaired and the other not. said it would cost $79 to fix.

next, i went to a safelite location down the street from the first shop and did the same thing. that guy said the exact opposite of the first guy. the chip the other guy said was not repaired, the safelite guy said was repaired and the other one not. safelite wanted $179 for the same work, but on the other chip.

so then, i drove to an auto glass and tinting shop i used to do business with commercially, and which i know and trust. guess what - both chips have already been repaired. nothing more to do.

what a bunch of either incompetents or crooks or both.

If you would have gone to another, would they have said you had two chips and none were repaired

Which shop matched your initial assessment?

LOL! Yeah, that possibility worries me.

my initial impression was more inline with the first shop's response, but i was hoping neither had been repaired so i could have the assurance of knowing i'd gotten them both fixed.

My windshield is in horrible shape but not cracked, and I'm just honestly waiting for the one surprise rock that cracks it. But that's because my insurance would cover it at no deductible.

Are you sure you don't have windshield coverage on your policy?

Lawson - i see you're in missouri. when i lived out west, it was common to have windshield insurance coverage, but since i moved to kansas, it seems like companies either don't offer or push glass coverage - or just make it stupidly expensive. but, you ask a good question and given the situation i'm going to double check with my agent. appreciate that!

what part of the state are you in? i'm in the KC area.
