Shifting gears in tiptronic - Confused
I have an '08 JDM GS460 with the 8 speed AA80E, and am a bit confused with the shifting scenarios and gears in general so, here are a couple of questions for those a bit more experienced with this model.
- If I am at a stand still and I move in to tiptronic mode, it appears on the display as starting in 4th to begin, I'm sure it's not starting in 4th. And in fact can feel it shift through gears occasionally and when flipping the stick over does not make sense with the gears it's gone through and what it shows me when I peak what gear it's in (by flicking it over).
- When in tiptronic it shifts for me still, and I don't want it to... But it does not always behave like that. Furthermore it seems to not want to give that up, and my inputs seem to make no difference like it's letting me pretend I'm changing the gears - But again, not always. Down shifting with my input seems as expected.

Ah yes, welcome to the Toyota/Lexus way of life.
There will be an actual expert on here, but the basis:
”tiptronic” in Lexus of your/our age etc is not really manually shifting, the gear you see on the screen is just the highest allowable gear the car will go to, the car will shift when it feels like it still.
So starting in 4 means it’ll still cycle through 1-4 (or in our AA80 cars they start in 2nd I think).
On decel when you drop gears, it’s simply telling it that the gear below is the highest you want, hence forcing it to shift down into that gear.
Simply put, you cannot manually shift properly.
ISF etc trans control module allows full manual control and faster shifts etc which is why their tiptronic is actually manually controlling the gears.

Bloody brilliant! Cheers man...
Yep, not a true "tiptronic." I think Toyota/Lexus documented this a while back but anything with the "S" mode will still shift like a conventional automatic transmission to the highest gear shown in the gauge. "M" mode is a "manual" type where it will not upshift for you but it will downshift at the "set" speed.
