Default engine serial numbers

How do engine serial numbers correlate to the vehicles vin. i.e how would you be able to know that that engine is the original engine by seeing the engines serial number.

I believe the engine serial is the vin

thats what I was thinking but its not the same. The engine serial is a different sequence of numbers on my year model. it starts with 3GRXXXXXX, Those last six numbers are not in my vin.

Did you ever figure out how to compare both numbers? I’m still trying to figure this out, maybe a build sheet?
