The light output on the Philips Ultinon 6000K seems to surpass the Garax and PIAA. At least the picture on the forum looks pretty impressive.
I used Google Japan to search for a vendor and it seems that the market price for these bulbs is 22,000 - 23,000 yen which is $250. Obviously shipping and customs duties may add to that. However this puts it in the same ballpark as the PIAA 5500K so it is better to go with Philips.
I have asked a Japanese person to explore this further for me and identify a cost competitive vendor who will ship to the USA.

They arrived yesterday. But unfortunately I ended up with the same vendor as everyone else, who charged $395 after shipping, taxes, etc.
You can get it cheaper if you bid in auctions, but bidding in Japanese auctions is very difficult without a Japanese address and Yahoo Japan Payments Account.

Fair enough. After shipping it's probably a 100 buck difference. I guess your contact in Japan was more effective than my Japanese friend in London!
