I just put in a K&N filter and noticed a second filter that appears to be in the top of our air filter , so what it look like that in 1 air box we have 2 filters I wonder if we can take out the top 1 which would give more air and a better sound and allowing it to breath more . Has anyone taken out the top air filter ? I know on the bmw site they have the same thing and they take it out , they said U.S law requires car manufacturers to install them ,it supposed to keep vapors released by the engine from getting into the atmosphere its call charcoal filter. What do you guys think ?

 

A lot of people have taken them out on other Toyota or Lexus model, it really doesnt make much of a difference performance wise.

I have never done it, but some owners on the Toyota forum say its a bit louder after the removal.

 

There is no difference in noise. Though, you'll see your mpg change erratically until the ECU learns to adjust after a few thousand miles.
