I traded in my wife's RX350 for the '08 GS350 and gas mileage is considerably better in the GS..
And BTW GS350 gets better gas mileage than the IS350, even though it has the same engine - probably has to do with the intake/fuel injection setup.

the gs350 has great gas mileage, don't get me wrong (i avg 26mpg, can't complain), but what i was trying to say is gas mileage was definitely NOT my primary concern. if so, then it would have been camry or something like that easily

I think the rwd version gs350 def gets better gas mileage overall. Not just by a few mpg. Especially in the city the awd gs350 mpg isnt that great but it is better than most cars for the power it gives. Def agree with you on that part!

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but now I have both, 08 RX350 AWD, and an 08 GS350 AWD. I noticed that our RX is actually getting better gas mileage, about 18.5-19.5 on a mostly city driving, vs GS 17-17.5

mostly city driving, it's gonna be a close call.

and you have to give the gs time break in.

No, only 270. But the GS is about 300 lbs lighter. It's weird, but the two engines, even though they are supposedly same, sound completely different. The RX sounds much quieter, where in GS you can hear the ticking and clicking. Sounds like either fuel injectors, or the valve lifters. The GS does accelerate much faster, compairing the the RX.

I do wish GS gets better gas mileage, too. I never get more than 20 mpg in city driving and Avg about 24 mpg on hwy over two years owning a GS. I usually got about 17 mpg in city.

It's true that RX does not have 300+ hp but GS has much better Cd compares to RX (0.27 vs. 0.35). Granted, the 3.5L RX engine isn't direct-injection, but getting better mpg than GS is interesting. According to Lexus, RX400h (same for RX450h) also getting better fuel consumption than the GS450h, any explanation?

it's totally different engines. both 6 cylinders and that's about where it ends. the gs350 engine has higher compression i believe and also with direct fuel injection. that's why the ticking sound and why the engine is quite a bit more powerful

about gas mileage, actually i think it depends a lot on the driving habits. i can safely say in my gs350, i get better gas mileage than when i drive the rx350 loaners. why? coz' to me the rx is way too slow, so i end up always pressing much harder on the gas to "attempt" to gain speed, thus reducing the gas mileage

Dont forget the GS's powertrain is program for performance and the RX's powertrain is program for economy.

Thanks, rominl. That explains it. I thought that the two engines were identical, other then some minor outside differences.

$200 bucks a barrel, who was that yahoo finance wizard? Right now it's closer $40/barrel.

I get about 20 mpg city driving, don't really drive much on the freeway so can't give you any numbers on that...17mpg does sound pretty low though, maybe depends if you are pumping premium also, thats what I use.
