Default 18" vs 17" Wheels

Just bought a new 2007 GS 350 RWD equipped with optional 18" wheels and Yokohama low profile tires. Ride seems too harsh for me (last two cars were BMW 7-series and Mercedes S-class, which drove great but I wanted to downsize). I'm thinking of asking the dealer to switch my wheels out for standard 17" wheels with normal profile tires -- please comment on whether you think it will make the ride noticeably smoother, and what about performance give up?

I know this may sound stupid but have you checked the tire pressure. I bought a new ES350 two months ago and when I drove it off the lot it rode just terrible. went back and it had 5 lbs to much air in all tires. Adjusted and it was perfect. ESs are very touchey about tire pressure. I now have a GS and I checked it before I drove off and it was fine. When the cars are shipped they always have the tire pressures high, 5 lb or so. If that isn't it, in theory, 17s would help but I am not sure you would feel it. There are probably some 18s out there that are not high performance that would be more compliant that might help. Also, if you have runflat tires they will ride harder. Sidewalls are quite stiff on runflats. Mabe some others have had experience with this. Mine has 18s and I have no problem with the ride but that is just me and everyone has a different taste. hope this helps

Don't change to the 17" stocks. First of all, it doesn't look as nice, secondly, the "harsh ride" doesn't come from the low-profile tires, at least not mainly. I believe it has to do with the Yokohama's. I'd suggest change the tires. Many 3GS owners love the Bridgestone or Michelins.

If you want a bigger tire, upgrade to 245/45 tire size. An extra few inches per turn won't hurt much.

I thought the same thing at first - it was the tire pressure. Let some air out and the ride will improve dramatically - might not match the 7-series or the S-class, but it will be better.
