It will. I have done that (well I didn't bother starting it I just held it up and saw that the green light on the start button lights). It doesn't use the battery to start the car in this fashion, it's an RFID it works the same way as theft deterrent devices they put in products that are just stickers. They are powered by an external magnetic field, in this case, powered by the actual car's starter switch.
