protential buyer for GS or LS need opinion
looking to replace my wife's 93 BMW 525ia soon.
list of car I'm looking at Model Year 2000-ish
* Lexus GS400/430 LS400
* BMW 740I, 540I
* MB E320, E430
If I was narrowing down to LEXUS. Which one would be a better choice LS or GS? Realizing that this is a GS forum I would like to hear the Good Bad and the ugly for GS or LS models. Thanks.

Well, it depends on what you (she) wants. More sport or more luxury?
The GS, especially the L-sportline version, would be much better sporting, but the luxury options of the LS are also nice.

You came to the right forum.
I once was an LS driver, needless to say, it was white.
Let me tell you this, both cars are fast...but the GS is faster in both seat of the pants and measured figures.
The GS is more sporty, while the LS is more luxurious.
I can add more comparisons to the list but I'm sure you all know those.
This was the deciding factor for me. The GS has a soul that connected to my eartly body. The LS also has a soul but for some reason it did not connect with me. I'll get there I know but I figure maybe a few more years.
My suggestion is for you to have your wife test drive both cars. Ask her which car she would be happier "to drive" in the long run. Drop any notion of choosing a car based merely on how more she'd be happier "to be seen in". If she's in doubt, do more tests. I think with these premium cars and premium prices, you ought to know exactly what you want. I made that mistake in the beginning thinking that I was ready for luxury with the ability to speed at times. But nope, after a few months, my genes were calling for sportiness with luxury playing the second fiddle. I am in transformation. My GS is probably about one of the quietest and that's because I am aging ;-)) Your wife has to know herself before she grabs the keys to any of those cars...
Hope it helps.

I'll echo what whitels and Ron said... I've got both a GS400 and an LS400 and they're two very different, yet very similar cars. The LS has a few more creature comfort features (motorized headrest anchors, lit seatbelt connectors, middle sunvisor, etc) and has a buttery smooth ride.
My GS used to have some of that civility (I've modded most of that away now, lol) but had a distinct sportiness that the LS didn't have even though they share the same powerplant.
Let her drive them both and pick which she likes better! You won't go wrong with either one of them.

That's not to say that I abandon her to the conniving wiles of the salesperson or don't provide input. But around here, if Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy! So the best Lex for her (if the two of you should so decide) is the one that she prefers.
(And that's why SHE WHO KNOWS AND MUST BE OBEYED has one of the first RXs that was sold here back in '98.)
Good luck!

Amen. Try to help them from making a mistake but if it is to be their car, let them pick it.
If anything I would ask her what she likes about the 525 and what she doesn't and go from there.

I noticed in your sig that the 3 cars you have including your wifes BMW have some sort of mods to them. Have the MOD BUG eh? Anyway, my opinion is to talk your wife into a GS so you can mod that one as well. The LS is a beautiful car but is limited on aftermarket items. The GS4 has the luxury & power and can always be upgraded with aftermarket stuff later on.

I'll narrow down to those two. I'm swaying toward a GS.
Thanks for all the replies.
