Is it possible to convert HID headlights to halogens?
My 2005 GS 430s HID xenon headlamps just died. I’ve now been told that it’s the ballast that has gone on it. Is it possible or has anyone ever tried replacing the H ID headlights with regular halogens, is this even possible? Any help would be appreciated!

Why would you want to change you hid to halogen? Halogens headlights are ugly doesn't suit you car. Just buy a replacement oem or aftermarket ballast and your good to go. I have a 03 GS430 and I love my hid headlights. Why would done grade to halogen and plus your wiring is different from GS with halogen.

The factory halogen headlights are awful in my opinion but I have seen a few previously wrecked GS430’s and Sport Design GS300’s that had the entire halogen headlight housing with halogen bulbs swapped in. I’m not sure how you set up the wiring but it’s possible.
You would be better off just buying a new ballast. I’d replace them both at the same time if you can afford that. You have to take the bumper off to remove the headlights anyway and it saves on labor, as I learned from replacing half a dozen LS430 ballasts. Your factory HID’s are quite a bit brighter as well.

Finding a used ballast would certainly be the easiest and most affordable way to go, but if you did want to convert it your biggest problem would be to find a halogen bulb that is compatible with the ds2 mount in the headlight housing. Replacing the housings with halogen ones would be way more expensive and involve way more work than replacing the ballast, but could of course be done. It’s possible that there is a halogen bulb that would work with the ds2 mount, maybe a 9003? So u didn’t need ti replace the housings? But once you deal with that, then you’ll need to sort the wiring, which could be difficult or could be easy,
It would probably even be pretty easy to install some aftermarket ballasts which are cheap, and would be easier than converting it to halogens.
The original question was about what would be involved to convert an hid car to halogens, and if cost if the motive, it looks to be much more expensive than doing a repair to an hid system.

re. housing yellowing: Have you tried polishing with headlight restoration kit? Typically the yellow oxidation is on the outer surface so it's easily removed. While making the job more challenging, post-polish clear coat is a must.

ya, just pick up a kit that includes everything. I have been using the kits made by cerekote and my headlights have been looking good for years.

It seems like you could replace a pair of halogen headlight housings with a pair of new aftermarket ones for about this same price but these became available last summer, and is a nice option if you wanted to get your OEM HID headlights looking brand new, with an extremely durable, and long lasting UV coating then this could be a good option for some owners.
