ASL is the auto sound leveling. When you have it on the small microphone in the head unit detects how loud the cabin is (for example if you had the windows down or sunroof open) and increases the volume of the stereo as the noise in the cabin increases (and decreases as it is quieter).
It works only marginally but IMO is a neat feature and better than nothing.

One not so cool feature of the 1998 to 2000 models (maybe 2001 as well) is the ECM cannot be reprogrammed if you loose all your master ignition keys.

regarding the stereo adjustments, jesod mentioned that he changed F and R to 7 and P1 to 3. later gs-ireland chimed in on what all the letters actually stand for... did anyone change any of the other settings such as the W(woofer), P2, or L? if so what did you set them to or is changing just the F, R, and P1 good enough?

radio setup
Been playing around with the "hidden radio settings" but can't seem to get it where I want it cuz some of my lcd display is out. Anyone here can tell me what else they set besides the already mentioned p1 f and r?

Good post Drew!
11) There are two 'stops' for windshield wipers on the 2nd gen GS, a winter / ice setting and a regular lower setting. If your wipers on on the winter setting they sit way up high on the window and don't tuck behind the cowl. Just push them down hard and they'll 'pop' past the winter stop into the normal one. Looks much better.
12) If you leave your gascap loose, you will get a check engine light after a bit of driving (this is on all newer Lexus). Put the cap back on tight and it should reset after a while. I disconnect the positive ground on the battery for about 5 minutes to do it right away.
