Default Starter going bad questions

I have a feeling my starter is going bad on my gs400, sometimes it starts fine then other times it will just click and I will have to turn the ignition a couple of times before it starts up or a couple of times it sounds like it's about to start up but sounds like something Locked up mid crank maybe the starter? It just started doing this the other day. I have already checked the battery and it tested good and the alternator is sending 13.6v to the battery.

Most likely just the starter needs replacement. You also can rebuild the starter solenoid as that is usually the problem with a bad starter as the brushes wear out over time and the inside gets covered in carbon dust from the wear.

Also if it just clicks and you are ever stranded somewhere, try to tap on the starter and see if it starts up as that works for a sort temporary time.

How many miles and is this the original starter? First be sure your battery terminals are tight believe it or not that can cause an issue.

I believe it's the original starter the car has 141k, I tighten the battery terminals and same issues is happening. I ordered a remanufactured denso starter and gaskets for the plenum. Is there any way to tap on the starter on this engine? It looks pretty tucked away any good angles to hit it from?

Yeah my starter went right around 147k but that was 8-9 years ago. I’m on my second starter now. There is no easy way to get to the starter but since this just started happening you should be able to get by for a few days. Of course, you wouldn’t want to go too long because a single click is usually the first warning sign. But since it’s on order you should be ok.

Not looking forward to changing out the starter, will driving it with the starter like this mess anything up? In my jeep it was easy to bang on to get it going but this car has it hidden so I can't give it a good whack.

Having the same problem currently, I went ahead and cleaned the wire that runs to the battery today , so if the problem persist I’d have to buy a new starter .
