Default Alternator killing batteries.

Im having a problem with over charging my batter in my 98 lexus gs400. With the battery disconnected, while light testing the connector plug at the alternator the light comes on, Is this suppose to happen seeing that there is no power to the car? Or could this be the cause of the overcharging?

Remove the plug from the alternator going to the fuse box, THEN check it.
