The back lighting on the instrument cluster has gone very dim on my 2001 gs430. I have done loads of searches and from what i have found it looks like the c212 capacitor on the circuit board is at fault, I have ordered a replacement capacitor , In the mean time because I use the car on a daily basis I thought a stopgap would be to put in a second hand cluster . my question is would a gen 2 gs 300 cluster be compatable ? I ask because of the rev counter ( presuming it works by impulses and one being a straight six and the other being a v8

 

You are correct, the tach will not read properly.

You could also swap out the tach itself.
