Default Valve cover gaskets fail!

Okay so last night I attempted to do my exuast and my intake valves cover gaskets. I was going to do my spark plugs as well. Everything went really smooth taking it apart. Had delays with a couple of screws but it was still smooth. So I have the intake manifold and the throttle body off and what do you know, the valve covers are like stuck. I checked if anything was in the way and removed all screws but they just wouldent come off. So 3 hours of my time just went to the trash. I could have done the plugs but there was no point since the cover will keep leaking. What was my problem? Was there a seal that I didint know of? In the diy they seem to just pop off. Thanks everyone in advance.

same thing happened to me the first time,
if someone had worked on it before me and used sealant on the valve covers
.
first i used a blade along the valve cover, then with a thin flat head screwdriver
i began prying on the valve cover slowly and gently all around,
i also used a rubber mallet to tap around the valve cover it took me about 30 mins
but it did come loose
then it took me about an hour to remove the silicone and sealant that was stuck on the valve cover .
