Please help with smelling fuel in cabin from air vents
Hello all CL members!
It has been awhile since I login to CL again.
It's nice to be in this CL again as always.
My 1999 GS400 with 152K today I replaced the aging battery with a new one. I was driving for 45 minutes then parked with engine running all of a sudden I was smelling gasoline coming from the vents because I had the front defrost on. I just got the car back from a friend, I let him borrow it for a week and the result of smelling gasoline in cabin because he had put some lower grade gasoline or has anything to do with the new battery or something more serious such as fuel pump, fuel injectors gone bad or some leak in the fuel rails? Could it just o-rings,grommets deteriorating? This is the first time I smell gasoline since I bought the car back in March 2012.. Any help is greatly appreciated!

For sure check under the hood for leaking fuel. This is totally possible, but doubtful. If he put lower grade fuel in the car and it detected knock/pinging, the ECU will pull timing and add fuel to rich up your AFRs. Rich enough to smell fuel in the cabin? More than likely, no. That along with resetting the ECU (changing the battery) *might* have been enough to make the can run very rich. If I were you, I'd get a tank full of higher octane gas (at least midgrade, premium preferred) and let than run through your entire fuel system and then reset your ECU again by unhooking the battery for 15 mins. Hope this helps!

putting lower octane will not cause fuel smell to come thru the cabin. I think it's more of a leaking fuel line that he probably hit while changing out the battery. Or maybe his friend was playing under the hood. I had this same issue with my first car out of college. The hose/clamp was worn and gas was leaking from it.
