Default replacement HU question

I'm starting my search for a replacement double din DVD/Navi unit for my ML 2001 GS300. My stock sub is blown as well, but I'm not really in the mood to spend a ton of money to update everything. The stock HU has a few burnt out LEDs so it's a pain to use at night and just looks trashy. My question is though, can I use the existing speakers w/ an aftermarket head unit's integrated amp, and will it sound good? Not looking for mind blowing sound, but something comparable to stock. I'm pretty sure I can't use the sub, but I'm ok with that for now. I'm a total noob when it comes to car audio, home theater stuff was always my thing. Thanks!

Yeah you can use the stock speakers with the aftermarket headunit. Obviously it ain't going to sound that good as it were with new speakers but for the meantime it should be alright.

you can also bypass the amp (which i did) and use my HU amp for the stock speakers, doesnt sound amazing but the HU amp was better than the stock amp

The OEM Pioneer speakers have a 2Ohm impedance so they make quite the best out of the HU amp.
But they are only 4" so dont expect Mindblowing performance. Once you upgrade to 6,5" (even for a smal budget) it will sound much better.

Sorry if I wasn't being clear. I want to replace my stock Mark Levinson head unit w/ a double din DVD/Nav type. I don't want to go all out right away (for monetary reasons) and would like to just install the HU w/ the stock speakers. I was looking for confirmation in that the system wouldn't tank or totally sound like garbage. As long as it's on par w/ what it was before, I'll be happy. This is all under the assumption that the stock sub won't hook up to the new HU.
Feeding off of that, will the HU hook up to the existing speakers w/ a pre-built harness, or am I going to have to go home grown for this? It seems all of the threads show someone hacking together a harness on their own.
