No smells, just a just raspy sound from what sounds like dead center under car. Getting progressively worse. Are parts available still or or aftermarket the better or only way to go?
My friend who works at a Lexus dealer just emailed:
"Look behind the CATS on the Y pipe. Look at the clamp area that holds the heat shield on the pipe. They tend to rust out there."

Couldn't find any aftermarket at the normal muffler shops so I went OEM. I think it was less than $500 iirc. It came complete with new heat sheilds. I figured it should last me another 10 years. Usually the muffler shop stuff is only good for a few years up here in the salt bed of the world.
I think what happened with the original is that the the salt and crud would build up in and around the heat shield causing accelerated rotting. Hard to decide if it is better to remove the shields on the new one also. All the y-pipe not covered by the heat shields was still very solid.

Any chance there is pictures of it out there on the net? I would like to see what I am up against.
Is it in a place that a good muff shop can actually weld up a worthy repair on it?

My y-pipe had a hole in it when I first bought the car. Had a cheap muffler shop make a new one. Unfortunately I couldn't find a shop with mandrel pipes. I read somewhere that Lexus y-pipes were actually very well designed for the GS400 and to stick with the stock pipes.
Right now it's the flanges connecting to the cats that have a very small leak. Lucky for me it's not throwing a code for that.
