do you have any concept of what a fair price might be? What is your guess? Here's a site to give you some baseline:

http://repairpal.com/

Here's what you do. You multiply hours by labor/hour price. The hours are based on book times that indicate what should be the appropriate time for a skilled mechanic.

How much do you think labor/hour costs for a skilled profession? Here's a hint, if you go to lexus it will be $150+ per hour. From an independent in california, expect $60 at the very low end to perhaps $100/hour in LA/SF city areas (rent is expensive for a shop)..

Not sure what is involved in the "rebuild" but the total for your whole job should be a few hours.
Also, you get what you pay for. So if you're shopping around for the cheapest mechanic possible, maybe there's a reason why they are so cheap, and why the other mechanic that charges more is still in business.
Do you shop around for the cheapest doctor or even the cheapest barber?

Sometimes though if you get everything done, they'll cut you a discount on "labor" but the profits may come from an inflated parts price.
