HID brightness..
Are there specific items I should be looking for when buying HID kits? There are the new "slim" ones. 55w, 25w, 100w ones. Color, I'm set on 8000. I'm most interested in lumen output. Brightest they can be. Keeping in mind that 6000 Kelvin is the brightest and 12000 Kelvin (purple) has very low output, 8000 is bright enough and not so blue (10000) that looks rice.
Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

And to verify you are not looking into shoving some re-based bulbs into a NON-OEM-HID housing are you?! I sure hope not.
As long as you are already stock OEM-HID then you can get some OSRAM or PHILIPS bulbs, 4300k is the highest output, 5000k Crystalvision Philips would be the next step up (in color temp) and are pure white, this is what I am running and love them.. Any higher in Kelvin and you are dropping output even though your eye may perceive brighter, no matter what any random hid bulb maker claims of their bulbs of higher ranges.
As for ballasts the stock ones are the most reliable, and I would just keep them. 35w is the most common and most bulbs are designed for 35w, there alot of 50w/55w ballasts out there now, and that is the max you even think about using. The 55w ballasts are just overdriving the 35w bulbs and will shorten the lifespan and they will burn a bit hotter as well. Although bulbs are so cheap these days it's not much a concern if they only last 2-3years instead of 4/5/6 years.
Retrofit Source now has their 55w specific Morimoto Bulbs designed to handle their 55w ballasts. They are D2S only though.

You ARE talking about replacing the D2R factory HID bulb in a OEM HID Auto-Leveling equipped GS correct?

The high's and lows are not such a big deal, since the high's shouldn't be on with oncoming traffic anyway, and the fogs cut-off pretty low..
HID bulbs and Halogen bulbs have different focal points, and they way they disperse light is different. This is why they will not reflect properly in a non-hid bowl.
