The first time I got GROM was almost 2 years ago for my IS300. Worked fine for 6 months and then I sold the car so I don't know if new owner had any issues with it.
Second time I bought it for my GS430 (the one with ipod/iphone cable, that charges it)
and after couple of months it started mulfunctioning, off and on. My problem is that it randomly doesn't get recognized by sound system; I press CD button to switch to CD2 and nothing! It only sees CD1 and there isn't CD2.
This happens randomly and it will come back only if I turn my ignition off and then back on! I contacted GROM about it back then (via email as this used to be their only contact info back then, I don't know if they already have a phone number available) and they told me to double-check connections and etc.! There is only 2 plugs that were just fine so I install this back again and the same thing happens again!
After all this going back and forth and due to their 'hussle' policy (you have to mail it to them first and wait for them to test it and etc.) before they can mail you replacement and you have to pay for shipping yourself!!! or you can pay for another unit while they test this one for issues.

To make the long story short I was busy, didn't have time to pull it out again and learned to live with this!

Fast forward year later or so my girlfriend is looking for Ipod adapter for her 03 Toyota 4runner and since this is probaly one of the cheapest products out there she decides to go with this one regardless of my complaints. I install it for her, nothing complex about it, and 3weeks after that the same thing happens to her adapter!!!!!!!

The bottom line is:

1) This product has obviously some type of design flaw
2) I would like to hear someone deal with their customer service first before I even consider them again
3) I wouldn't buy from them again!

I'm interested in this unit. Any updates as to how it's working, any issues, etc? Install advice, i.e. where did you mount the grom "brain", and run the cables? Thanks!

I've had no problems with mine. Mounted the brain in front of the shifter (there's a little "pocket" there). Ran the phone cable into the center console and the USB cable into the glovebox.

Default How Does CD Changer Still Work?

How does the CD changer still work if you have the Grom adapter cable plugged into the CD changer port? All the instructions I've read on their site say you lose the functionality of the CD changer when using the Grom module b/c it has to use the port. Does the Grom USB cable plug in between the CD changer and radio or something?

I had the Mark One Grom for my 2008 ML GS. It never worked properly, occasionaly it would burst into life, but most of the time it never saw the USB stick. After to-ing and fro-ing with Grom I gave up when they stopped attempting to upgrade the firmware and brought out a Mark Two unit. I decided that it wasn't worth trying another one.

I would still like a working USB connection since this third generation GS is a keeper as far as I am concerned. But I'm still waiting for someone to produce one that is a more sane price than the Vaistech units, which also appear to have problems with GSs.

Currently I'm sticking to MP3 CDs...

Whoa whoa whoa, so I can hook my iPhone up to it and hear my music through the speakers? Although there's no way I'd do it if I lost my 6 disc changer functionality..
