Default 98 GS300 squeals when accelarating...help

My 1998 GS300 is squealing when I accelarte. It will not do it when it is sitting idle or at a leveled out speed. Is this a belt issue or a tension issue or what? Thanks ahead of time.

Taterhead,

I would definitely check the tension of your GS300's accessory belt. To check the tension of said belt, grab any area of the belt that is between two pulleys with your fingers. There should be approximately 1/4 inch play in the belt for most vehicles.

It always helps to perform another check so turn on the vehicle and examine the belt in motion. Listen specifically for whining coming from the alternator. If you notice any whine or "pulsing" sound from the alternator, your belt tension is too tight and will damage the alternator. In this case, turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise to loosen the belt and recheck the tension.

Here is a diagram displaying all of the accessory (or V) belts in your GS: GS300 V-Belt diagram. Familiarize yourself with the components as well as the adjustment process because this will likely not be the last time that you have to contend with this issue
