So there I was driving home from six flags last night and all of a sudden my radio shuts off (aftermarket alpine installed 3 years ago)? Next thing my headlights started to get really dim and my battery light came on, a minute or so later all of the lights underneath the speedometer came on and I started to lose power??? Finally it got to the point where pressing on the gas pedal made my car jerk back and forth and would no longer accelerate. I pulled over and walked home to get my girlfriends car thinking that it needed to be jumped. When I got back to my car 15 minutes later it started right back up again!!! I drove it down the road about a half mile and once again it died. Finally I jumped it with my girlfriends car and it drove home with out any issues what so ever. I also drove it today without any issues (yet) although I feel that this problem is randomly going to rear its head again. My car also now makes a mild whirring noise that gets louder with increased RPM, the battery and alternator seem to be working properly (battery 12V and alternator 13.6ish).
ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!
Although I had a lot more going on. My car would start clicking by it self and wouldnt stay running. The lights would go out, it would die, woudlnt start etc.
Turned out to be my ignition switch, ***** to change but those problems went totally away.
I have no idea if this will help, but maybe another angle to start looking?
Good luck, and dont forget to let us know what it was when you figure it out!
I would keep a voltmeter hooked up and visible in the car at all times while you sort this out...
Could be; weak battery(even though it reads 12V), cables, including grounds. Or alternator internals, voltage regulator, worn brushes, debris on the slip rings.
With your mileage, I would guess your have a weak battery and a bad alternator.
Check the battery cables positive and negative if loose. Check the power cable going to the alternator and check the ground on the alternator ( check the mounting bolts ). If all is good, then the alternator is bad.
And the winner is........... Alternator!!!! After cranking the A/C and my system at the same time I had my brother test it with a multi meter and it was pushing inconsistent numbers. I replaced it this afternoon and it is running better than it has in MONTHS!!! Thank you for your help everyone!
