Default A/C Blows Cool Not Cold

I have a 1998 Gs400 (200,00k)
The a/c turns on, but only blows cool air. After driving around in 100+ degrees here in Texas the cool air has no effect. I read in a thread from 2006 the guy changed only his condenser, and his a/c blew cold again. I tried adding freon, but that didn't work. After a quick 5 minute look a mechanic said I need a new compressor, but I'm not sure about that because my rear vents were not open when he checked.

Will changing the condenser solve my problem, or will I need a new compressor?

Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks. Spence

Well I sure hope you didn't really put "freon" in your ride! Your hvac system does not use freon, which is a name brand R12 refrigerant made by DuPont. You should be charging it with R134a, which is what you most likely did since you have to have a license to by R12 .......And yes a condenser would fix your A/C, if that's what is wrong with the system. If that isn't it, then no. Take it to a reputable repair establishment, and have them do a proper a/c service to it. If they are reputable they will charge you a smallish fee to hook up at least gauges to the system and do some diagnosing. It is an older vehicle. It very well may be low on refrigerant. And that's it.

you have to have a license to buy r134a also unless you buy a can smaller than 16oz which then you do not need a license....btw the ones they sell at the autozones are a BLEND they not true r134a. =IF u have a license or can get someone who has one, try some R414B or hotshot instead. take this to a trusted mechanic and ask them to check your system, please don't just add freon without knowing the issues IF YOU OVERCHARGE A SYSTEM IT WONT COOL PROPERLY EITHER

ALSO have you ever heard of heatsoak OP? sometimes when its REALLY hot here the units just cannot keep up. we having a heat wave here also and its in the 100's. get a pocket thermometer and put it in the vents and tell me the temp after riding around for a bit

Your air conditioning system also might need to be pressurized again. That could be a possible problem. Any garage/dealer can fix that.

Would Meineke be considered a reputable a/c service center?

quick easy check, check the side glass from the receiver dryer. If it's clear, system is ok. If you see bubbles or cloudy substance then it's not. If you got a plugged condenser, your ac wont be as cold either.
