I currently have stern st-2's. Ive had them for 5+ years and have bent 2 in that time and had them repaired. Well I was told that sterns were really heavy but at the time that was all I could afford. Anyway I recently looked into some vellano 3pc wheels. I asked the manufacturer how much they weighed and I was told 31lbs for a 20X9 mesh style wheel.
Well I decided to weigh my wheels and to my surprise, my "super heavy" one piece sterns weigh 30.5 lbs. (I weighed the 20x8.5 wheel) So are the vellano's heavy also?
Does anyone know how much 3pc wheels 20x8.5-11 should weigh? I'm tryin to see if its worth buying 3pc wheels.
My sterns were cheap and in 5+years of driving on crappy LA streets i have only had 2 bends. Less than 100 to fix each. Not bad in my book. Here is a list of my wheels I weighed.
Oem 17" chrome wheel with tire.......51lbs each
stern 20x8.5 with tires...................55lbs
stern 20x9.5 with tires...................60.5lbs
stern 20x8.5 wheel alone................30.5lbs
any opinions or wheel weights would be appreciated
It should be noted that tires weigh a considerable amount and should also be factored if you're looking to minimize wheel inertia. I've seen tires weigh as much as 25 lbs per tire which will make the lightest of wheels seem heavy.

Most all 3 piece wheels are going to be heavy. If you've ever taken a 3 piece wheel apart you'll know the weight on the nuts and bolts holding the face together is already heavy chunk that wouldn't normally be there on a 2 piece or mono. Personally I don't see the allure in 3 piece wheels.

The main advantage of 3 piece wheels was to allow the owner to swap rim outers (lip) when damaged. But today, its so difficult to source out outers on your own that its almost not even worth it. And should you find a place that will help you swap outers, they'll charge you 200-300 to do the job so most of the time they just take a hammer and straighten up the wheel which negates the whole advantage in the 1st place.

The whole purpose of being forged was so you'd have stronger metal to allow for more weight saving face design similar to the GT, F1 cars designs. Then now I see forged full face wheels and I have to ask myself, is that really necessary?

To the OP, a 51 lb wheel w/ tire + air (yes it actually does add weight) is not too bad. I've had 19" forged wheels that weighed in at 50 lbs all dressed up.

If you want weight savings, you need to be looking at smaller diameter forged mono-block wheels.

Hope this helps!

It's not hard to source an outter lip. We got a vendor here that sales here and some shops in California got hook ups.

they're not ????

Mine are 19" forged monoblock about 22lbs i think.
I run 17" SSR winter wheels and they are much heavier, braking/acceleration is definitely noticeable.
i would definitely look into lighter/stronger ones.

Man...all this talk is making me upset. I wonder how quick my car would be with my current mods...I could probably chirp in second no problem...no such thing with my current 19's.

Perhaps next year I will put 'em up for sale for a good price; they are in ridiculous condition. They would be nice for those that aren't too concerned with wheel weight; I always get complimented on them.

Good information on this thread!
