Default Card key...

I am a relatively new owner of a GS. I picked it up from a dealer so it only came with the valet key and card key, NO master key.

I was wondering what do I do with the card key? Can I take it out and out a shell on it? And what do I need to get a master key?

Thanks.

Wait, the dealer only gave you a Valet key? You have to pay the dealership to get a master key based off your vin. Depending on where you go, you might have to pay $200-300+ to get it all sorted and how many keys you want.

Master Key $145
Key Cutting $40
Programming $$$

I'd get the dealership to replace that for you. Valet keys are just that, no way for a owner to roll like that.

Keep in mind you will not be able to open the glove box or trunk with the valet key especially if you deactivate the trunk release switch. Only the regular keys can.

You are correct sir. I can start my car with the card key and they duplicated my master key using the card key programming years ago. OP, hope they gave you the right card key at the dealer though.... otherwise get ready to open your wallet.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. I didn't make it clear but it wasn't a Lexus dealership. I'll try looking into the card key to see if it actually works (I've also read it was the master key too).

Thanks for the help. Appreciated.

Your card key has a chip in it? Mine doesn't, its just a skeleton and will not start my car.

the chip is in the credit card sized holder NOT the key on this one,the c.c. holder that should accompany the key. its made to store in your wallet like a credit card

looks like this

http://lexus.sewellparts.com/accesso...2001/2739.html

i had just the key and was gonna buy the credit card holder till i saw it was $118.96 for JUST the holder with the chip in it

the key itself was $42.76 but i already had the key

I was looking at that the other day on Sewell. I did not know the holder had the chip in it, i was wondering why it was so expensive lol.

So basically, as long as the holder is in the car, then the car should start with the key? If so, i have to look into this because mine does not...it just cranks.

yeah thats why its so expensive the chip is inside their, i had a old card from a different lexus i owned but no dealer would rechip it so i tossed it

you hold the holder up to the alarm part and start the car....i dont think it will work just sitting anyplace in the car

I usually place the holder near the ignition key while starting it and it starts no problem.
