Default CEL on along with VSC & VSC OFF on GS400

This afternoon i decided to drive my GS400 after two weeks, Car started just fine and drove fine, Went to Gas station...Right after i got some gas, as i came to the red light...Car felt like it will shut off as it was idling really low (it was fluctuating). As soon as car started to shake, Check engine light came on along with VSC & VSC off.

It seems fine during driving, so issue seems to be only when it's idling.

My mechanic pulled the codes and said it needs VVT Control solenoid for passenger side.

Any advice before i replace the part?

might be wrong temp range on plugs. also I would take the ocv out and clean it put 12 vlts to the selinoid and activate it back and forth, uness it is stuck in place at a point other than normal it doesnt effect the car at idle. Infact you can unplug it and nothing will happen. I however I did buy one of these at my local lexus dealer and since I have a shop to order through saved a great deal of money. It only cost me $96 as opposed to $125. GL

havent had a chance to check the OCV or VVT solenoid...My mechanic thinks that it's VVT Solenoid without looking at it....Parts guy at lexus dealer said that they never had to order VVT solenoid for 1uz motor, Just want to make sure i get the right part.

Also does anyone know where this part is located? Pics will def. help

You would need to open the valve cover gasket to clean them

Hello;

This my first posting and hope to be my last, to the threads as it's time for me to share my experience for the benefit of others.

My Car: 2002 GS 430, 145k miles

Codes: P1346 & P1349 VVT Malfuntion (Bank 1).

Symptons: CEL, VSC/Off lights on and intermitten rough idle

Work Done:

Mechanic 1: Cleaned the VVTi Sensor and checked for potential problems, replaced 2 Camshaft Position Sensors, labor $195 Parts $175. No fix.

Mechanic 2: Replaced spark plug; flushed oil, removed and cleaned air cleaner housing, ignition coils, trottle body, $300 Total, no fix.

Mechanic 2 (again): Replaced VVT OCV and removed drive belt, idler pully, timing cover, valve cover, camshaft cap, replaced valve cover gasket, $620. Problem appears to be fixed so far for 2 days.

I hope this message will save you or someone some cost of my total $1,290 incurred and days of frustration from simple (at least I thought) intermitten idle, Check engine light, and VSC lights on.

Utimately, I believe the sludge was the main culpit causing the blockage and mis-firings; Good luck.....

I opened up my valve cover today and put it back. Now I'm getting intermittent misfire and misfire on cylinder 3 and 4. It was fine before I opened it up. Also opened the timing belt cover too.

Did I do something wrong in the process?

I might be able to help you out. I have a 00 gs300. I had the same problem. Vsc lights were on, check engine light was on, and my car was shaking like crazy. I went to my machanic and he ran my codes. I had a misfire in the.2nd cylinder. He did a compression test and cyclinder 2 had lower compressiom then the others. Came to find out I had bent valves in the 2nd cylinder. Got my head redone at a machine shop and my mechanic put it back together. Car runs like a champ with no shakes or check engine lights.

Thanks for the tip. I had no problem with the intermitten rough idle and CEL lights over the weekend. A bad VVTi-OCV and the sludge build up in the camshaft was the culpit, and the latest fix has apparently taken care of the problem, so far.

But the saga continues. My "Oil light" went on this morning on my way to work. Oil is leaking from the side that the mechanic did not remove the sludge. The sludge removal from the driver side (LH) camshaft which causded the disconnection/blokage lead to transfer of the oil presure to the right camshaft side which caused the leak. I am not sure I explaining it right; a release of one side pressure had let to leak of the other side.

Bottom line, mechanic has to replace and reseal the gaskets from both camshafts. He will also change the timingbelt and/or waterpump while he is already opening up the camshafts. Another near $1,000 cost, adding up to $2,300 from the original repair.

Let's hope for the best and I will keep all you posted, just in case you may be interested.

Question on the OCV. There is only one bolt holding it. How do I remove it? Do I just unbolt the one screw and wiggle it out or do I need to open the valve cover and remove another bolt in there? TIA.
