Question GS vs LS weight and power???

I am trying to compare the GS and LS cars:

I just traded my 96 LS400 (260hp/270tq) for a 99 LS400 (290hp/300tq).

My 96 weighed 3725 pounds on the HRP scales with about 1/3 tank of gas and without me in it. It ran 15.4 @ 91mph on a 2.35 60ft.

The 99 is heavier but I haven't weighed it yet. I have read tests in mags that it runs 14.8 @ 95 and weighs around 3900.

Anyone weighed their GS400? I have heard 3700-3750. Track numbers?

Anyone know WHY the GS has 10 more HP and TQ than the LS??? Compression? Exhaust? Other? Just a rating for marketing... no real difference? This LS runs pretty strong. I will take it to the track soon and report numbers if anyone cares.

whitels,

Yeah, the 96 was a good car but WOW the 99 is WAY nicer, faster, more stable, better period...

I will post times when I get them.

I am curious about the engines. Why would Lexus go to the expense of certifying 2 nearly identical engines? It would make MUCH more sense to use the same engine in each car (GS and LS) For example, the 1998 LS1 Corvette was rated at 345hp and the LS1 Camaro/Firebirds rated at 305hp but all three made virutally the SAME rear wheel horsepower. I am wondering if this is a case where marketing decided for the performance image of the GS that 300hp was the magic number and the more conservative LS buyer (hah) would be comfortable at 290hp... like 2.99 vs 3 dollars.... psychological. Heck the 4.3 liter LS and GS have the same hp ratings as the 4.0 liter engines albiet at lower rpms. hmmmm.....

Hey you might be right. Your time slip will tell. Based on posts here, the GS4 can do 14.5 +/- and 5.7-6.0 on the average.

Granted that the GS is lighter, and then based on your LS timeslip, maybe we can deduce something. But again, the measly 10 hp is hard to translate to track time due to a host of variables. It can be a strong whip of headwind or tailwind and that's enough to change the numbers that would lead you to believe there's the 10 hp difference.

How about a dyno? Oh well...I'll settle for anything at this point.
