i will help you the best that i can. the removal of the VSV at the canister is cake, just takes a little patience. all in all it takes about 40 mins to maybe hour and a half. i have to dig up the pics i took.
BTW the VSV that I used is a doorman VSV for the 2nd Gen GS. its half the price of the OEM and just as good. its good to me for sometime now, including my other toyotas.

I am going through the same issue. Rather than shelling out an arm and a leg for the whole canister I intend on getting the VSV first to see if that solves the issue. In the past the CEL would come on after a fill up, every now and then, after resetting it would stay off for a few months. Over the past few months the CEL has been on constantly, resetting it only keeps it off for a couple of days before it comes back on.
BTW part number for VSV is 90910-12271

It sounds like you may be topping off the gas tank when you fill up. When filling up, you should stop at the first click of the nozzle. If you don't and keep filling the tank, the gas will overflow back into the canister. Hence, you get the CEL. After so much of that, it can ruin the canister. Ask me how I know.
Actually I have never topped it off, first click and the nozzle goes back on the pump, I should also add that I never get partial fill ups i.e. $10, $20 etc, its usually complete fill ups, not sure if that would have anything to do with the situation.

I wouldn't buy a used canister. It's such a PITA to get to with all the stuff in the way. I'd rather spend the extra cash and get a new one, do it right and do it once.

Hello,
Can you need a new canister but have no codes?
I've changed the purge valve a year ago (march 2019). The gas smell went away.
But every-time I fill-up the tank, I get strong gas smells outside the car. It stays!
Once, I had black smoke. But not for months.
Thoughts?
Finally, this injector hose (No. 1) on top of the engine moves even with the clamp. Could this be the cause of the gas smell? When I smell there, no gas smell.
