Default Need Help with Engine Knock

While driving up to Lake George this weekend, my brothers stock 98 GS4, began knocking like crazy. We arent really too great with engines and was hoping somewhere here would be able to chime in on what the issue may be. Is the engine pretty much gone?

Take the serpentine belt off and run the motor with out it to see if that noise is there.

...please tell me its the ac compressor or some debris in a pulley!

stop driving the car, have a tech take a look at it. That actually sounds like my last car when I blew the engine, the timing had gone on the car. Basically had the top end go on me and it killed my journals. They required a machinist to redo it or purchase a new top end. I opted to part my car.

oh man, that sounds like lower end rod knock.

Unfortunately, this is not a minor repair and will require a shop that can disassemble engines. I've never seen a 1UZ-FE do this.

This is what it sounds like. (These are really good examples of the sound).
