I have a 2000 Lexus Gs400 and when I put it in manual shift mode(paddle shift) it doesn't go into first, is that normal??? It seems I remember one time that it did, I never really use it but I'm curious if that could be a sign of something wrong. Any input will be great. it has 170k, it has been about 60k since trans flush, thinking i need to do!
Baliztik, is correct although the cluster nevers shows "1" at a stop nor can you summon it with the buttons...the car definitely leaves from a standstill in 1st gear. So to put this into perspective, the driver doesn't control the 1-2 shift, because once underway if the driver upshifts it would go to 3rd.
The only reasoning I see behind this, say if Lexus allowed the driver to control the 1-2 shift, you could put additional stress overtime on the tranny/driveline from repeated hard launches trying to bark the tires etc..
It goes to 1st, but you can only shift to 2nd. When it stops it will go to 1st but the display will say 2nd and automatically shift into 2nd and then you can shift up as you please.
