Default Check Engine Light - No gas cap

I lost my gas cap and after a week or so my check engine light came on. I bought a gas cap at Autozone for it and it's been about another week but my check engine light is still on. I assumed it came on because of the lack of a gas cap. Does that make sense to people? Any idea how long it takes beofre it goes off or do I need to get it reset? Thanks for any help.

some cars have that "system" had a car like that...light should go out in matter of hours or a couple day max..bad gas cap probably..give it some more time before you spend in scanning the car to turn off that light, have the gas cap check at any shop or smog test station (should cost you a few dollars)

You would need to check the code to proceed.

Is the check engine light suppose to come on when the gas cap is missing? I thought I read that in the manual somewhere.
