So from my understanding the 01-03 RX steering wheels will fit into a ’99 gs300. If so, will my ’99 gs300 airbag fit right into the 01-03 RX steering wheel or do I need the 01-03 air bags as well? Anyone knows another way around this besides getting another steering wheel from an 2nd gen gs? Because my steering wheel is all cracked up but my airbags are still good. I know this been covered a few times and I’ve searched but the conversation has been confusing for me. Thanks guys

 

Kevin I am looking into getting a wood steering wheel on my 98 GS 300 and I think it is along the same application as what you need. From what I understand, the fitment of the 98-00 GS airbag is not good with the 01-03 RX 300 or the 01+ GS steering wheels. There is some overlap with the airbag and it does not line up correctly. However, the 98-00 GS is a direct steering wheel and airbag swap with the 01-03 RX 300 since they are both single stage airbag units and the 98-00 GS did not have tiptronics. You can also use a 01+ GS steering wheel with the airbag of the 01-03 RX 300.

I am sure some of the experts will chime in and correct me if I am wrong.

This is my understanding...

The styles of 98-00 and 01+ Lexus steering wheels are different. The wheel and the airbag have different curves. For this reason, you can't swap either between the two.

The 98-00 GS is wired/programmed for a FIRST generation airbag--the only chrome-emblemed first generation airbag is from the 01-03 RX.

SO...you need to get a 01+ Lexus steering wheel and a 01-03 RX airbag to make the upgrade happen.
