Default 1998 GS400 Not Starting

I have a 1998 GS400 with about 155,000 miles on it. Recently I started my vehicle and backed out of my parking spot and my car died. I tried to start it again and it turned over, but did not start. After a couple more times my battery went dead. I replaced the battery and it is doing the same thing. About every 5th time it starts but then quickly dies. I live in Washington and we recently have gotten quite a bit of snow. Do you think this could have something to do with it? The symptoms my vehicle is having are very similar to when your car is out of gas, but there is plenty of gas in it. I talked to a few friends and they said it possibly could be the fuel pump or filter. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like fuel pump failure to me. If your able to measure the fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge; that will tell you if the pump is the culprit.

Default GS400 Starting Problems

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling that may be the problem. I also remembered that I had to jack up the vehicle the other day to put on my chains because the car is lowered. It was really snowy so it was really hard to get the jack exactly where I wanted. I am pretty sure that it was a secure area , but is it possible that there may be a fuel line in that area that could have been pinched? Thanks again for your quick response.

Possible that you may have pinched something somewhere. Bring it to a garage if you can, and have them look at it.

I doubt it, the oem routing of fuel lines are very tight meaning out of the way, unless you intentionally damage it. Do you smell fuel? What you turn the ignition on prior to the start mode, can you hear the pump prime?

If it's fuel, it could simply be a fuel filter. It could also be a vacuum leak. Or it could be a restricted exhaust (like a failed converter). If you can pull the air intake hose off, have someone turn over the car while you shoot carb cleaner into the throttle body, you can determine if car will run at all and eliminate restriced exhaust. Check all vacuum lines for damage or if they've fallen off due to age. Pull fuel filter, try blowing through it in the direction of how the fuel would flow (warning! do not suck!) to see if it is clogged. Good advice above, open gas cap, have someone turn key on (do not start) listen for fuel pump prime like 2 seconds.
