Default Should I avoid factory navigation? ('98 GS400)

i am looking at a 1998 gs400 with 89k miles.... it has the navigation option, but i heard that the factory navigations are horrible. my original plans were to find one without the factory navigation and get a pioneer or alpine in dash. i would like to read what you guys think.... thanks

I guess the earlier models had problem, I don't have nav so... just buy one without nav and upgrade to a aftermarlet in dash unit, maybe louiegs4 can chime in, I read he's been having issues with his nav

my friend has nav on his 99 GS. compared to my 03, it looks outdated and elementary.
in the end, its what YOU want. i love my oem nav.

I love my OEM navigation also. I like it because the audio, climate control, and other controls are integrated and controlled via the touchscreen. However, if you want something that is fully updated with the most recent/current road maps, with the newest technological features/advancements, the new GPS-equipped aftermarket systems will work better for you.

I work for a dealer and i must say Lexus Nav is the best out for all the high end vehicles. I love the factory nav but i kinda wish i didnt have it because i really wanted an aftermarket nav unit that had the option for back-up camera, bluetooth, and audio/video in.

I have a 03 Gs430 and i had to go with everything after market to get those features and it wasnt cheap. But i must say the accuracy of the Lexus oem navigation is great. So its really up to you if you want a nice clean set up and dont care much for all those other features get one with a nav. But if you want those things get one without it.

I love my NAV because it is very integrated and simple to operate. I love that I don't have to detach my stock NAV when parking. At times though, I want to upgrade to an aftermarket unit for the MP3/Video/Bluetooth, etc.

I love the OEM in my 02. I definitely would not have purchased a earlier model with the smaller screen - looks weird to me.

I also love not having to worry about someone breaking my window to jack my aftermarket Alpine/Pioneer/Etc Navi unit. Good piece of mind at night and at malls.

I have a 99 with Nav. It's pretty cool and works well. They only made one last update in 2004 and after that no more. So depends if you live in a area with lots of "newer" streets. I would not avoid it. Stock radio works really well too unless you want to vibrate the block

I don't like my stock Navi, I live in Canada, and the Navi don't work in Canada. So I've yet to be able to try out the Navi functions.

all you need is a 2 din kit for GS without navi, a 2 din deck, an AC control from non navi GS, that's about it I think... then you can take out the CD changer and the HDD.

has anyone replaced the stock tape deck (in a car WITH the stock NAVI)?

I wonder if it would screw up the navi if you did that... and i also wonder what it would look like to have an aftermarket deck with a screen under the stock NAVI.. any one seen this?

You mean the 2 din kit or the AC? both should be on Ebay. The 2 din I think audio shops might be able to find you one, though E bay may be cheaper anyways while you're ordering the AC on Ebay too...
