Two methods here. One is jack up the car and grab the top and bottom of wheel and push and pull to see if it moves. The other method is to lift the wheel up and down, there should be no movement unless your strong enough to compress the spring, and also listen for creaks and groans and weird noises during turns and bumps.
If you DIY, it costs around $90 for each ball joint (Lexus dealer) and maybe 15-20 for the puller at autozone or you can rent it. I took me about 20 minutes per side. I would say an 1.0 to 1.5 hours average for both joints.
