Portable GPS 'What's your choice'
I got my wife the Garmin C330 for Christmas for her RX. She loves it. It's a bit clunky, but gets the job done. I've read Garmin is a great brand to go with. The higher models are definitely worth it.

many of the other models have this traffic feature as well.
I've used the Garmin on my trip to Atlanta, didn't have a problem at all. It was very user friendly and would recommend it to anyone.
I've tried a TomTom. I did not like it at all and don't think it was user friendly.

I really dig the GPS on Alpine double din head units though.
I've got a TomTom One and initially, it was really weird to use. A software update later and it was a lil bit easier to use...well, it had some useful new features.
The Navigon 7100 and 5100 have all the great features (text to speech, Zagat restaurant reviews, etc) but two that differentiate:
1) free traffic for life!
2) Reality View - screen captures of 8000 US "spaghetti-bowl" intersections that pop up when you approach so you will see the overhead road signs in advance.
That's what sold me - I travel a lot for my job and it has been a life-saver.

I had the Garmin StreetPilot 3 something series which I gave to my sister months ago. I now have the Magellan Maestro 4250 which is good so far. The problem that I have with the stock in-dash NAV unit is that it's low. Most newer model cars have the NAV positioned higher where it's close or at eye level.
I'm really happy with my Garmin C340. The prices have come down quite a bit too.
I haven't used other GPSs, to be fair, but I've used other Garmin GPS devices before (I also have the Forerunner 301 GPS/heart rate monitor for running). Garmin is pretty good about updating firmware and software on a regular basis.

When I bought my car, I was looking a number of GS430's, with and without NAV. At the time, I wanted one with NAV which, as luck would have it, was the one thing the Cinnabar with Black interior 430 I ended up with didn't have. I bought a Garmin, turned out to be a good choice as we have taken trips with it in three different cars. Portable units do have their advantages.
I'd also recommend the Garmin line - I personally have a Nuvi 200W. I only spent ~ $200 on it and Its a life saver. If you look around you can find amazing deals for nuvi's online. I found mine on ebay a while back. Looks like you could get one for about $160. The 200 line doesnt have all the bells and whistles but it does a solid job at NAV and its widescreen which is nice. I've had friends spend 400+ for the decked out units and when it comes down to it they never use all the fancy features..
