Question How do I remove/replace the steering wheel?

How do I remove and replace my steering wheel on my 2001 GS430? Anybody have a simple checklist or list of procedures? Any tricks to watch out for? Any special tools needed?

I would definitely reccommend letting your dealer do this! When I replaced my factory w/ my "custom wood wheel" I let my dealership do this, do to "obvious" reasons and they also have the steering wheel "puller"!

There's a cool trick where you set off the airbag and take your head off with it.

Check out American-Stitches at the link below. Thanks to gs4to4 for showing me this link. It is very similar to the GS, and in my case the RX. I am thinking of replacing my 2000 wheel and airbag for the 2001 wood wheel and airbag. So, I removed my airbag last week to see if the changeover would work. It's really easy to get the airbag off, you just have to do it right since you are dealing with an airbag.

I went ahead and disonnected both the positive and negative sides of my batter long before I began working. I also removed the SRS fuse. I actually did all this the night before just to be safe, but it is recomended that you wait at least 15 minutes.

In order to get the steering wheel off you will need a steering wheel puller. They are not expensive and can be found at just about any auto parts store. I have a 2001 RX wood/leather wheel, dismounted, if you want any pictures to help you. It should be the same as the 2001 GS.
