How Accurate is Outside Thermometer
Hi,
The other day I was driving by a bank and they had a display that showed outside temperature. I've noticed that the thermometer in my GS is 12 degrees too high.
It would not concern me all that much -- just substract 12 and you get the true temperature, but I think its tied up into the climate control system and may end up turning the AC on when its too cold ( possible damage?).
Anybode else noticed something like this. Can a dealer adjust it?
Thanks.

Pretty
accurate as long as you are moving forward at a fairly good clip. The OAT sensor is mounted behind the front bumper just in front of the A/C condenser and engine cooling radiator. If you stop for a brief period or move slowly in traffic the radiant heat from these devices will fairly quickly influence the sensor, increasing its reading.
The other instance is if you park the car briefy after the engine has fully warmed up. When you drive away the reading might be fairly high from the same affect.
My 92 LS used this sensor to determine when to disable the A/C compressor, below 35F. The A/C would sometimes work when it shouldn't becuase of the inordiantely high reading from the radiant affects or just simply becuase it was stored in a warm garage overnight before driving out on a COLD morning.
Somewhere along the line Lexus has changed the design so that the OAT sensor isn't used to disable the A/C compressor.

Hey guys, temp. readings on banks, billboards, radio stations, etc. are from your local weather station, wherever it is. Mine is at the airport, which is 40 miles away and several degrees different.
When I'm near the airport, the temp. reported is spot on.

I also have a stand alone thermostat that can be located anywhere and it also is close to the incar.

Why is it that everyone thinks the Bank's thermometer is the most accurate thermometer in the WORLD??????
"My temp is off from the actual real temp at the bank" Has anyone ever thought that maybe the temp at the bank is wrong???!!!
My 2 cents...

That's similar to the days when the bank shows the temp to be 115 and you know it's only in the 90's. Most bank themos are WAY off.
Anyway I thought that they redesigned the temp gauge to be on the interior up against the front windshield. At least that what I have read, and was told by a salesperson.

The 2001 Rx300, the 2000 GS300, and the 2001 911 all have the OAT sensor in the front of the car, behind the bumper for the Lexii, in the air intake for the 911.
I understand some vehicles now have it in the front of the outside rear view mirror.
