generally on the 2gs - timing belt, water pump, and crank seal.... these cars usually dont leak at the cam seals.

change out your drive belt at this time since its no additional labor...

 

Parts needed:

Timing Belt
Water Pump
O-rings that fit between the water pump and the elbow coming off the head
Cam seals should be done, there is absolutly no reason not to do them, they are dirt cheap and install in no time.
Wouldn't hurt to do a front main seal as well. (Becareful not to scratch the seating surface when removing the old seal)
Cam Seals and front main seals are cheap and you are already in the area.
If the car has really high miles through a timing belt tensioner on as well.
Probably want to pick up some coolant as well.

 

cam seals on the gs3 are easy to do. I believe to do the cam seals on the gs4 the valve cover needs to be removed. Something not everyone can do at home.

 

Changed it right at 90k with the dealer

 

Changed it at 90K....timing belt and water pump

for $850-950 it is peace of mind for anothe 90K miles.

since everthing else is a ripp off.

I replaced mine at about 75K miles, it's a 99' so it was 8 years old. I tell all my cust to replace theirs at 7years or 90K which ever comes first.

The belt is rubber and cord, heated and cooled a lot. How long do you think it will last.

I also did my water pump, it had a little bit of crust at the wheep hole, but my seals were ok. Just had a cust in the other day with 95K on his 99'. Same thing, belt and water pump, seals were ok.

Should cost about 800-900 for the belt and pump at Lexus. Some dealers may suggest more strongly on the seals.

Belts are suppose to last more than 90k miles, but its just preventative maintenance. Some people get lucky, whiles other aren't so lucky. Rubber deteriorates over time, so it's not just mileage that kills it.

 

If you intend to keep the car until 200K miles, then change it at 105K miles ... so you don't have to do that again

All belts (Serpetine Belt?)
Flush Cooling System
New Hose Clamps

 

I changed mine at around 95K. I had my trusted mechanic replace, timing belt, serpentine belts, water pump (whole unit) for $650. I even called a local lexus dealer and they quoted me $550 for replacement of timing belt...I doubt that includes water pump....its a shock to hear prices of $1500 +.

 

Glad I stumbled onto this thread. I just bought my 99 GS4 a couple weeks ago. Purchased with 76K on it, just turned 80K. 4K miles in 2weeks!! Most of them hard miles too... Anyway, I also purchased an extended warranty with pretty mush bumper to bumper coverage. What are the chances they cover preventative maintence? If not, I might as well get it out of the way now.

Levels are good.

Burning clean, no smell or smoke out the pipes

it was right after turning off my AC so it may have been condinsation in the system >>??

Got to get it to the tech and have him search as he changes my timing belt and what not../

 

I'm getting mine replaced this weekend (timing belt, water pump, radiator coolant flush) and my car is a 99 GS400 with just over 60K miles.

My car is a summer only car that's why the miles are low.
