GS4 vs CLK....?

If I were shopping a car for my mom, I'd not look for the ones with high horsepower. Because (1) it is not safe for my mom to drive a 300ish horsepower car (2) why would she need that kind of power
GS300 offers more space and the price is relatively lower than CLK. GS is more comfy IMO and with larger trunk, she won't have any problem when going to gorceries shopping.
Just my 0.02.

GS4. More room, more reliable, more luxury, more power.
More room: self explanatory - coupe vs 4 dr. May not use all the room all the time, but if you don't have it to begin with, you can't just add it on. Unless you put a hitch on the Merc and tow a trailer. But the folks in the trailer will likely complain. Moms need room for stuff and trunks for more stuff.
More reliable: lots of anecdotal reports about MB's difficulties. Looking back at Consumer Reports surveys, Benz seems to have a little more trouble down the road, and their reliability is listed as "average" for the most part. Not a lot of data on the GS (and none pre-98) but the 98 was felt to be a little more trouble prone. Looking at older LS400s (for an idea of how well the systems hold up) vs older Mercs definitely gives edge to Lexus. And here's another anecdote (and part of the reason I vote for the V8): one of my closest friends bought a 91 LS used with about 20k on it. It now has 230k on it and the V8 still runs strong, burns NO oil.
More luxury: again, self explanatory.
More power: no one says you've got to give it the boot all the time. There's nothing inherently explosive about the V8's power delivery. It is smooth, linear and easily modulated. Your mom may have more power there than she needs for most circumstances, but the 300 hp available won't result in loss of car control by itself. Most accidents occur when someone hits you or someone does something unseen/unexpected which you either can't avoid or whack something else in the process of avoiding it. And those things normally will occur at urban speeds which will be attainable in anything she drives, regardless of whether it's a Viper or a Golf Diesel.
Advantage: GS400 (unless your mom has a preference, in which case none of the above matters; she should buy and drive what she wants to drive).
imho.

Since you're getting the car for your mom...
GET THE GS300 LOADED (although I don't think you can get the Mark Levinson/Nav package anymore) and take the extra money and spend it. She won't know the difference.
My mom has an LS430 which can spank my GS300 in acceleration, but that's when I drive. When she drives, I can run circles around her.
So here's some advice... take the GS over the MB (I also know alot of people with problems ... MB customer service is crappy). And take the lesser of the GSs... unless you think your mom really would benefit from the higher performance of the GS430.
As for me I'm waiting for the next generation GS. Just got my 2001 GS300 M/L/Nav Silver/Black.... so I have some time before my lease is up.

I know the CLK430 is not a good track car. I was at the track with a guy who had a CLK430. His brake system light kept coming on. We weren't sure if he boiled the fluid. Also, he felt the car was looser after the day at the track.
