Figured it out. I put the trunk liner back in place by carefully flexing it as it passed the strut bar mounting attachments. I then used an Exacto knife to slice the liner by feeling where the mounts pushed against the back side of the liner. I followed up with some stout scissors (shears) to turn the slices into slots. Next I used some 3M spray adhesive to reattach the white fluffy sound deadener to the backside of the liner where it pulled lose when it snagged on the strut bar mounts during the trial fitting process.
