Default 1999 GS300 - evaporator replacement

A friend of mine is looking for some advice on replacing the evaportor in his 1999 GS300. He stopped by the Lexus dealer today and this is what he had to say, "The evaporator in my car cannot be replaced without replacing the entire cooler unit. They have had several attempts to do so and they always end up cracking the cooler unit. Therefore, Lexus's policy now is to replace the entire cooler unit, which includes the evaporator. Total estimated cost: 3400. That's not including their diagnostic to confirm what's wrong: 150. "

What do you all think about this? Seems really expensive. $2000 was my guess for the entire job with parts from someone other than the Lexus dealer.

I'll do some searches for recommended Lexus mechanics in the Tampa, FL area. If any are reading this that want to do this job please speak up.

Thanks, Chad

I had my evaporator/expansion valve replaced by a lexus tech on a private job, 3000k is way to high I was quoted 1300 by my local shop. Basically when they replace the evaporator core they replace the expansion valve as well, parts come out to about $350, and the work would be about 900 at most since the whole entire front dash has to be taken apart, and I really do mean the WHOLE DASH, I watched the whole thing happen, took about 4 hours. Screw the lexus dealership and go to a Toyota dealership for a quote, if theres is over 1500 try some good shops in your area.
