My "transmission-eating" GS430...

FWIW, they said they found "scoring, burnt fluid, and metal shavings" in the old trans. Charming . They claimed they checked everything and flushed everything, so I am "as good as new". We'll see how long the new one holds up.

i've never heard of a tranny failing either.. especially TWICE?? and like people have said, write down that you've tried to fix the tranny so if your warranty ends you can still take it back and have them work on it 'cause it'd be the manufacturers fault... good luck on the fix

I know this is an old post but I just found it searching for total transmission fluid capacity.
Trans failure on a GS4xx is very rare. Even very agressive driving would not explain the failure of 2 transmissions at such an early life. We are talking 2 brand new Lexus trannys. The chance of having 2 new Lexus trannys failing is virtually nil. Has to be something with the car. Something the previous owner did or something that mis-aligns the trans.
Either:
1) The previous owner used nitrous oxide and probably a high stall torque converter.
or
2) The actual engine to transmission bellhousing bolt pattern is slightly off. This would cause the torque converter to be mis-aligned in the transmission causing the pump and seals to be stressed and fail.
I am leaning towards #1 as that could place enough extra stress to hurt a stock tranny.

you guys are all MISLEAD, these trannys do NOT go bad. Any sign hinting at transmission issues they just tell you to replace the entire tranny because your under warranty so you wont care and they make big bucks off tranny replacements and they charge the warranty so its a win win because the customer like you is happy because they get a NEW tranny. Ill be the first one to say it the GS430's, at least the 2001s, they all have delayed shifting into Drive only. Anytime I shift from R to D or from P to D it takes a good full second for the tranny to engage, other then that my tranny shifts smooth as butter. Lexus did this I believe to compensate for the lunge more GS's do when you shift to D on a cold start. Or it could be the valve body they way it is designed. But at the end of the day this seems to be a normal occurence. Others with the 430 can chime in as well and say if theirs does this because im pretty sure this is normal.. That was ONE of the things I liked better about the 400, more responsive tranny.
